And it also discusses the role of expectations, beliefs, and values in motivating an individual.

McClelland’s theory of motivation is based on the premise that three needs influence an individual’s behavior. These needs are known as the Need for Achievement, the Need for Affiliation, and the Need for Power.

– The Need for Achievement:

The Need for Achievement is a need to achieve, succeed and win. It can be described as the desire to do better than others or to be the best in a particular field of activity. This need can be stimulated by offering rewards for success or by challenging the individual to do better than he has done before.

– The Need for Affiliation:

The Need for Affiliation is a need to be liked and accepted by others. It can be described as the desire to belong, to feel part of a group, and to have a network of friends. People with a high Need for Affiliation enjoy being around others and are often perceived as friendly, approachable, and warm. They feel lonely or unhappy when they are not around other people.

In extreme cases, the Need for Affiliation can be described as a need to belong to a different group from society at large. This is called “counterculture” and can lead to adopting beliefs or behaviors that are considered unusual or abnormal by society at large. This is sometimes referred to as “being a rebel” and can be expressed in clothing, hairstyle, language, music, and lifestyle.

The Need for Affiliation is often associated with socially isolated people. People who are not part of a group or who do not have friends can feel very lonely and depressed. This need may be expressed by joining groups that have little to do with their interests. For example, a person who is very interested in music may join a bowling league.

– The Need for Power:

The need for power is a desire to influence others and to have control over them. It is also the need for status, recognition, and prestige. However, power can be sought through either positive or negative means.
